Venue

Conference Basics:

Affirmations

 The Venue:

Affirmations recently moved into its new home, in this 17,000 square foot, three story building.  The new building design included environmentally-friendly features, cyber cafe with 15 public access computers and free wireless internet, beautiful 2-story art gallery, outdoor rooftop sky deck and library & media center.  Please feel free explore the space and make yourself at home, while demonstrating respect for this unique venue.

Restrooms:  Both restrooms on the first floor are gender-inclusive spaces.  There is also a single stall bathroom available in the basement.

Lockers: For your convenience, there are lockers located in the basement, outside of the game room.  They are 25 cents per use.

Computers:  Affirmations’ David Bohnett Cyber Center & Café provides 15 public-access computers, pre-loaded with the latest MS Office and Adobe software products.  Wireless internet is also available.  Check your conference bag for a coupon for 30 free minutes of computer time.  Additional time can be purchased for:

  • $3.00 for the first ½ hour
  • $5.00 for the 1 hour
  • $2.00 or each additional ½ hour

Where can I take a break or hang out?  The Media Center, located on the lower level is a great place to relax, read, and rest in between workshops.  The Bayard Rustin Librarymedia center contains over a thousand fiction and non-fiction titles of interest to the LGBT Community.  Or, visit the Game Room, also located on the lower level, for a game of foosball, pool, ping-pong, or put a few songs on the jukebox.

Parking: Parallel parking is available on 9 Mile Road, and metered parking is located behind the building in a lot across from the rear entrance. Meters run until 9:00 PM (and the Ferndale Police WILL ticket).  Free parking is available on the neighborhood side streets.

Safe Space Guidelines

In order to assure a safe and welcoming environment for all participants, we ask everyone to please observe the following guidelines:

 Respect

Please demonstrate respect for everyone’s identity and expression by using people’s preferred pronouns and not making assumptions about anyone’s identity. Also, remember that people may have very different physical boundaries, and all physical contact requires consent.  Keep in mind that respect also means actively listening in workshops and events, and allowing everyone an opportunity to participate.

 Pictures/Video

Absolutely no photography or video-taping without the explicit permission of everyone involved.  Please ask before taking any pictures or video.

Confidentiality

Out of respect and concern for safety, please remember that what you hear and see at the conference must stay at the conference.  Please take the information you learn home with you, leave everyone else’s business behind!

 Drug and Alcohol Policy

Alcohol and other drugs are not allowed at the conference.  Anyone under the influence or in possession of alcohol or other drugs will immediately be asked to leave the conference.

 Smoking

Affirmations is a non-smoking facility, including all indoor spaces and the outdoor sky deck.  In addition, please refrain from smoking near the front or back door of the facility, as many conference attendees have allergies, asthma and other breathing conditions that can be made worse by cigarette smoke.  (Quit kits are available at the registration table).
